Discover the whole process of transformation of the humble tea leaves from the fields into the world famous brew when you visit the tea plantation a couple of hours drive away from Colombo. The lush area of Ingiriya boasts of a climate that’s conducive for tea cultivation. You will be picked up from your port and shall drive through some scenic locales on your way to the plantation.
Considered one of the finest teas in the world, Ceylon tea has been produced in Sri Lanka since the crop was first introduced in 1867. Upon arrival at Ingiriya, you’ll receive a special welcome with garlands made out of tea leaves before visiting the tea plantation to watch the tea being hand-picked from the plant. If the conditions permit, you could witness the rubber tapping process as well. Proceeding to the tea factory, you’ll be able to watch the hand-picked tea crop being graded, before going through the various stages involved in quality tea production. No artificial ingredients are added at any stage of the manufacturing process. Lunch and Mineral water will be provided. We shall then proceed to the Elephant village at Bandaragama, where you can see large herds of wild Asiatic elephants that are nursed, bred in captivity. We then drive back to the capital and once you are in Colombo you shall visit the Gangarama Temple before heading back to your ship.
2. COLOMBO CITY TOUR WITH PRIVATE GUIDE 4-5 Hours
Colombo, Sri Lanka‘s bustling commercial hub, is located on the country’s west coast and with a population of between 800,000 and one million (estimates vary) is by far the country’s biggest city, as well as the most developed. The city is a jarring mix of old and new, with a central cluster of high-rise office blocks and hotels overshadowing red-tiled colonial-era buildings and sprawling street markets which overflow with high-piled fruit and vegetables, colourful silks and cottons, and deliciously fragrant spices. On its crowded streets stand places of worship, symbolic of Sri Lanka‘s multiethnic heritage: graceful Buddhist viharas (temples), for instance, stand close to extravagant temples encrusted with Hindu statuary, along with Muslim mosques with minarets scattered along Colombo’s streets.
