Backwaters

Kerala is a haven of backwaters as this Indian state is flanked by the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and the Western Ghats. With very little to no current, backwaters in Kerala form a network of water bodies that include numerous lagoons, rivers, lakes, canals and several inlets. These backwaters comprise of five large lakes interconnected with canals, which is fed by around forty rivers. Backwaters are formed by water creating low barrier islands through the actions of waves & shore currants. 

These backwaters form a unique ecosystem within them. The specialty of Kerala backwaters is that the freshwater from various rivers meets the seawater of the Arabian Sea. A variety of unique species are found in this ecosystem. The flora and fauna that surround this area are a treat to watch out for. 

Houseboats

Kerala houseboats are also known as Kettuvallams cause of the way these boats are constructed. Travel enthusiasts can take a ride on these while enjoying the scenery of natural surroundings and the environment. Traditionally, these boats were used to ferry commodities through these backwaters; things such as rice, which was cultivated on the fertile lands on the banks of these backwaters. 

Used as living cottages of Kerala Royalty, these houseboats are now modified according to the need of tourists. Houseboats can be called as floating cottages with all amenities as required by traveling people. Now a day, houseboats are modified with bedrooms, washroom and a kitchen with some art of the boat as a structure like a balcony. Kerala cuisine is prepared on a houseboat by people that are part of them. The experience of being in a houseboat for a day could be interesting and a thrilling one.
